(Town Day) Fitzgerald Falls

I tore down camp and hiked to Fitzgerald falls. Out of film, I truly regret not being able to photograph them; they are so beautiful and running full. They flow through a solid rock channel, a single stream at the top and divide about 1/2 way down into two branches, kind of like a Greek Lambda. Camped nearby on a plateau is a weekender - his two cases of beer and dog. Conversation indicates his girlfriend has gone for his morning coffee and will return shortly and give me the town information I seek. I wait, she returns and delivers his coffee then gives me a ride into town right to the only motel in the place - Grecks. I get a lakefront marina room for $35 and a restaurant with patio on the lake. No laundromat, I do my wash in the sink of the room. Dinner is a 3/4 pound burger with fries and 4 kinds of salad from a salad bar, two glasses of good red wine.

I relax and stroll by the lake, spend some time sitting in the sun on a community pavilion, watch a pair of sandpipers fish and turtles swim in a feeder channel. Its not the town I expected: I expected an expensive tourist trap after my Kent CT experience. Its a little lakeside community with not much going for it save the marinas and a few lakeside bars that attract hordes of bikers. Cottages and houses are crammed in and like many other upstate NY communities, there are lots of empty storefronts and properties for sale. There is a large police presence for the size of the community. Tomorrow when the post office opens, I get my resupply and move on to the NJ leg of my journey. I am anxious to get home.
